In the city known as The Birthplace of Soul, Stax Records was the place where soul was recorded.
In addition to being the birthplace of this this musical form bringing together gospel, jazz and R&B, Memphis was at the centre of American civil rights and economic tensions. The soulful music that came out of Stax Records was both inspired by and reflected this pivotal and tumultuous period in Memphis and wider U.S. in the 1960s.
